FROM THE CATWALKS TO THE STREETS - THE COMEBACK OF THE BALLET FLATS

Already noticed during the last summer season, the ballet flat are definitely coming back in 2025. Long star of the catwalks in the years 2000, this shoe was seen to disappear for more than a decade because considered as outdated. We are witnessing the modernization of the ballerina and she gradually takes place in our dressing rooms.

First used as dance shoes, the ballerina takes a fashion turn quite quickly. Much more comfortable than a regular dance shoe, they were reworked by Repetto and then worn by celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn or Brigitte Bardot. Also featured on several international Vogue covers, it became the shoe to wear every day until the beginning of the 21st century. It was replaced by the sneakers that has a great craze at this time. The sportswear and utilitarian style was more prominent unlike the preppy style associated with the iconic ballet flats that were gradually disappearing from the catwalks.

This is how for a year and a half the latter reappears. Indeed, comfort is increasingly highlighted in everyday looks but being chic and elegant isn’t set aside. The ballet flats perfectly represent this mix of aesthetics. We return to the eternal “casual chic”. It crosses the seasons, years and styles to become an essential of our wardrobe. This timelessness is displayed differently according to the brands that rework the shoes according to their artistic and stylistic perspective. Thus, the ballet flats are available under various aesthetics: classic, rock with metallic details, square toe to modernize the silhouette... No matter how it is worn, the ballet flats elevates every look.

Several fashion houses have proposed their model of the iconic shoe. Maison Margiela is one of the few brands that have reworked the ballets flats many times. Known for their famous slit at the front of the shoe, the Tabis are also found in ballerinas. In smooth, grained, heeled leather, with an elastic band on top, there is necessarily a pair suitable for each. MM6 also presents its own ballet flats version with a very specific shoe tip called “Anatomic”. Inspired by curves, the toe is rounded according to the shape of the front of the foot.
